How to Relieve Wegovy Nausea
Reviewed by Sydney Duong, RD, GLPeak Clinical Lead · Last updated 2026-06-17
Quick answer: Most Wegovy nausea responds to smaller, lower-fat meals, slow eating, steady hydration with electrolytes, and avoiding lying down for 2 hours after eating. Persistent vomiting or severe pain needs prescriber input — don't push through.
Why Wegovy causes nausea
Wegovy slows gastric emptying. Food stays in your stomach longer, which is part of how the drug reduces appetite — but if you eat more than your stomach can handle, fullness becomes nausea. Most nausea is dose- and meal-related, not a sign anything is wrong.
What actually helps
- Smaller portions: aim for plates that look 'too small.' Stop at 70% full.
- Lower fat: fat slows gastric emptying even further. Skip fried food, heavy cream sauces.
- Slow eating: 20+ minutes per meal. Put the fork down between bites.
- Cold or room-temperature foods: easier on the stomach than hot, fragrant meals.
- Sit upright for 2 hours after eating — don't lie down.
- Hydration: small sips throughout the day. Add electrolytes if you're eating less.
- Ginger: tea, chews, or capsules.
- Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine): commonly recommended for first-trimester nausea, works for some GLP-1 patients too.
What doesn't help (and may make it worse)
- Large meals — even of 'healthy' food
- Greasy or fried food
- Carbonated drinks during meals
- Lying down right after eating
- Skipping meals entirely (sometimes worsens nausea later)
When to call your prescriber
Persistent vomiting (more than 24 hours), inability to keep liquids down, severe upper-abdominal pain, dehydration symptoms, or nausea that doesn't ease after a week on a new dose. They may slow titration, adjust the dose, or prescribe an antiemetic like ondansetron.
Frequently asked questions
How long does Wegovy nausea last?
Most patients see significant improvement within 1–2 weeks at each dose level as the body adapts. The first dose-step-up is usually the worst; later weeks at the same dose are easier.
Does eating before or after Wegovy injection matter?
No — Wegovy can be injected at any time of day, with or without food. The injection day itself isn't worse for most patients; nausea usually emerges in the 24–48 hours after.
What foods are easiest on a nauseous stomach?
Plain crackers, rice, toast, banana, applesauce, broth, eggs, Greek yogurt, and lean grilled chicken. Avoid fried, greasy, and spicy foods until symptoms ease.
Can I take Zofran for Wegovy nausea?
Many prescribers will prescribe ondansetron (Zofran) for short-term use when nausea interferes with eating or hydration. Ask before assuming.
