Sulfur burps on GLP-1 medications
Why Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound and other GLP-1s can cause rotten-egg burps, how common burping was in trials, what may help, and which symptoms need a doctor.
Explains sulfur (rotten-egg) burps on GLP-1 medications. Burping, listed as eructation, was reported in placebo-controlled trials by about 7% of adults on Wegovy 2.4 mg versus under 1% on placebo, 4 to 5% on Zepbound versus 1%, 6 to 8% on Foundayo versus 1%, and 4.5% on Saxenda versus 0.2%. Trials did not record the sulfur smell; slower stomach emptying is the usual explanation, and suspected food triggers come from clinical experience. Stomach side effects are reported most during dose increases. Suggestions include smaller, slower meals, finding personal trigger foods, not lying down after eating, and asking the prescriber about holding a dose longer. The page lists warning signs that need a doctor: severe lasting stomach pain, gallbladder symptoms, persistent vomiting or dehydration. It explains how logging symptoms with severity in the GLPeak journal, next to logged doses, helps spot patterns.
