Wegovy Plateau: Why You Stopped Losing Weight and How to Restart
Reviewed by Sydney Duong, RD, GLPeak Clinical Lead · Last updated 2026-06-17
Quick answer: Wegovy plateaus are usually a sign your calorie target needs a refresh, not that the drug stopped working. The fix has four steps: recalculate TDEE at your current weight, raise protein to preserve muscle, add resistance training to protect basal metabolic rate, and confirm with your prescriber that you're on the right maintenance dose.
Why Wegovy plateaus happen
Wegovy reaches a 2.4 mg maintenance dose, the highest semaglutide dose available. That produces rapid early loss — often 1–2 lbs/week through the titration period. As you lose weight, your basal metabolic rate falls, the deficit narrows, and the scale stalls.
Appetite also tends to creep back up after 4–6 months on a stable dose. The drug still works, but the absolute suppression is less dramatic than week 1.
The four-step plateau protocol
Work through these in order before considering dose changes.
- Recalculate TDEE at your current weight — the most common cause of stalls.
- Aim for 0.7–1.0 g protein per pound of goal weight.
- Add 2–3 resistance-training sessions per week.
- Confirm with your prescriber that 2.4 mg is the right maintenance dose for you (some patients do better at 1.7 mg long-term).
When to talk to your provider
A 2–3 week stall on Wegovy is normal. A 6+ week stall with no change to intake is worth a clinical conversation — sometimes a brief dose pause, a switch to tirzepatide, or a metabolic workup is appropriate.
Frequently asked questions
How long do Wegovy plateaus typically last?
Most resolve within 4–8 weeks of adjusting calories, protein, or activity. Plateaus longer than 8 weeks usually need a clinical conversation.
Should I switch from Wegovy to Zepbound if I'm plateauing?
Some patients do, with their prescriber's guidance. SURMOUNT-5 showed Zepbound produces more weight loss on average than Wegovy at top doses. But switching adds a new titration period and isn't always covered by insurance.
Is Wegovy still working at a plateau?
Yes. A plateau means your deficit closed, not that the drug stopped suppressing appetite. Wegovy is still stabilizing your weight at a lower set point than where you started.
Should I take a break from Wegovy to break a plateau?
Generally no. Stopping Wegovy typically causes appetite rebound within 4–6 weeks and weight regain over 6–12 months. Plateau-driven breaks are not a recognized clinical strategy.
